To celebrate the start of the 2011 cruising season we've decided to jettison all the nasty, manky cushions off the boat and go for a minimalist look in the cockpit and on the flybridge. So gone are the old facing forward/facing backwards seats from upstairs, with their rotten wooden frame, and in their place, a big open space where we can put our favourite camping deckchairs, complete with tinny holder. And for the cockpit we're going for the 'Berbse zithoek' look and are already on the hunt for a couple of waterproof, outdoor fatboys. Who knows... it might even improve fuel economy!

When we took the bench out in the cockpit we started to uncover the full horror of its poor construction and managed to convince ourselves it couldn't be original Broom handiwork anyway, as it was nowhere near their standards of craftmanship. The bench was ill-fitting around the step which leads out to the bathing platform and at each end the cushions caught on the side steps, with one end higher than the other so it wasn't even level. And it wasn't at all comfortable, and it was a breeding ground for clutter and tut. I'm not sure how long we'll survive with the new streamlined image but so far we're enjoying it.
