The provinces of Groningen and Drenthe are doing their best to promote themselves as areas for water recreation but most of the waterside towns and villages are still very underdeveloped from a boating point of view. The principal route of interest is that from Friesland to the Eems at Delfzijl, the gateway to Germany and the Baltic, and the city of Groningen itself is a cultural highlight.
